How do I know if the bee's are Africanized (Killer) Bee's?

There are no distinguishing marks that indicate a difference. It's all in the behavior. Africanized bee's are much more aggressive and get agitated very quickly. They will pursue a threat for up to 1/4 mile!

What to do if attacked by bee's:

- RUN! Bees are less likely to pursue a target that is far away from the hive. Do not play dead or swat them. Most people can outrun them, you just may have to run a few blocks.
- Quickly get into a house, car, tent, or any other enclosure. Close all windows and doors.
- DO NOT jump into the pool! The bees will wait for you above the water when you come up for air.
-Protect your face to prevent stings to the eyes, nose and mouth. Bees are attracted to where ever carbon dioxide is expelled. Facial stings are far more dangerous than body stings. Pull your shirt over your head if no other protection is available.

How to treat a bee sting:

- Stay calm and get to a cool, indoor location
- If you have been stung more than 10-12 times or notice any other symptoms other than local pain, itching or swelling, seek medical attention.
- If the stingers are still in your skin, gently remove them with your finger nail, credit card or blunt knife at an angle.
- DO NOT squeeze the stingers with your fingers or tweezers. The venom sac is still attached, and if you squeeze it more venom will be injected.
- Apply cold compress to relieve pain and swelling. DO NOT apply ice directly.
- Itching should subside in a few hours. If itching lasts more than a couple days or you appear to be having an allergic reaction, call a doctor.
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: burning and itching, body swelling, body rash, difficulty breathing, dizziness, nausea, shock or unconsciousness.
-If you know you are allergic to bee stings, consult your doctor about a preventative anti-venom first aid kit.
- If you see any one being attacked by bees, call 9-1-1! DO NOT TRY TO HELP!
